Yacella: Effective Combined Oral Contraceptive

What is Yacella?

Yacella is a combined oral contraceptive pill, commonly referred to as ‘the pill’, that is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken correctly. It contains two synthetic hormones:

  • Oestrogen (30mcg of ethinylestradiol)
  • Progestogen (3mg of drospirenone)

Apart from its primary role in preventing pregnancy, Yacella helps regulate menstrual cycles, reduce painful periods, and manage premenstrual symptoms.

How Does Yacella Work?

Yacella combines two hormones that work together to prevent pregnancy by:

  1. Preventing Ovulation: Ethinylestradiol stops the release of an egg from the ovaries.
  2. Thickening Cervical Mucus: Drospirenone makes it harder for sperm to reach an egg.
  3. Thinning the Womb Lining: This reduces the likelihood of a fertilised egg implanting and growing.

How Do I Take Yacella?

  • Dosage: Take one pill daily for 21 consecutive days, followed by a 7-day break during which you’ll have a withdrawal bleed (similar to a period).
  • Start Date: Start taking Yacella on the first day of your period for immediate protection.
    • If starting on days 2–5 of your period, use additional contraception (e.g., condoms) for the first 7 days.

What Happens If I Miss a Pill?

  1. Less than 12 Hours Late: Take the missed pill as soon as possible, and continue as normal. Protection is maintained.
  2. More than 12 Hours Late: Your protection may be reduced. Follow these steps:
    • If fewer than 7 pills are left in your strip, start the next pack immediately without a break.
    • For detailed guidance, consult the patient information leaflet.

What to Do in Case of Vomiting or Diarrhoea?

  • Vomiting: If you vomit within 3 hours of taking a pill, take another pill as soon as possible.
  • Severe Diarrhoea: Treat this as if you’ve missed a pill; use additional contraception until your symptoms subside.

Benefits of Yacella

  • Effective Contraception: Over 99% effective when taken correctly.
  • Regulates Periods: Makes them lighter, more regular, and less painful.
  • Reduces PMS Symptoms: Helps alleviate mood swings, cramps, and other premenstrual discomforts.
  • Reversible: Fertility typically returns quickly after stopping the pill.

Possible Side Effects of Yacella

Most women tolerate Yacella well, but some may experience mild side effects such as:

  • Spotting between periods
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Nausea
  • Mood changes

Serious Side Effects:
Yacella slightly increases the risk of blood clots. If you notice symptoms like severe leg pain, chest pain, or sudden breathlessness, seek medical help immediately.
